Big sports weekend here in Georgia and for the two I follow, it was a great weekend (outside of Game 5 of the World Series.) For my Dawgs, they did not seem to miss a beat against Florida and nearly shut them out. Once again, they scored over 30 points and allowed 13 or less. For that reason, clearly they remain tops in my ever so scientific and heavily researched top 10:
- Georgia (8-0)
- Michigan State (8-0)
- Oklahoma (9-0)
- Cincinnati (8-0)
- Alabama (7-1)
- Oregon (7-1)
- Ohio State (7-1)
- Wake Forest (8-0)
- Michigan (7-1)
- Notre Dame (7-1)
After Georgia, I had to go with Michigan State. I had Michigan high this past week and State beat them pretty clearly (the final score looks closer than the actual game.) The Big 10 is finally getting into the thick of their schedule so things are going to quickly change. I left Oklahoma and Cincy where they were (for now.) I was tempted to jump Bama over Cincy but they had a BYE week and the polls still have the Bearcats high. I suspect that will not be the case when the Playoff rankings come out on Tuesday.
Following the Tide there remains the Oregon/Ohio state conundrum. While I (and many others) think Ohio State is the better team, the fact is still there...Oregon beat Ohio State on the road. That game still happened and must be counted. Until or unless Oregon loses another game, they have to be ranked ahead of Ohio State. SMU went down this weekend so they fell out, but Wake Forest keeps winning and has a real shot of making the playoffs as it stands right now. I was ahead of the major polls by placing them in the top 10 last week and they have now caught up with me. The ACC may still have a shot this year.
I didn't want to drop Michigan down too far because it was not a blow out to State (and I have them at 2 now) so they remain in the top 10. Let's see if that stays that way after they play Ohio State in a few weeks. And finally, I had to put Notre Dame in as 10. I wanted to put Baylor (7-1) there but they have the same issue as Oregon/Ohio State. As long as Baylor holds the same record as Oklahoma State (7-1), Baylor has to come in second because they lost to Oklahoma State. Sure, UTSA is still out there at 8-0 but they don't belong here. And while Texas A&M (6-2) and Auburn (6-2) are building strong resumes and still have an outside shot at the playoffs, it is a stretch with their two losses. Thus I had to go with Notre Dame loathe as I am to include them (yes, it's personal.)
The slate of games for this coming weekend is a bit of a fall off after the sportgasm we just saw, but there is Bama vs. LSU (4-4), Wake Forest at North Carolina (4-4), and Baylor at TCU (3-5) as well as a showdown between the aforementioned Texas A&M vs. Auburn. My Dawgs get Missouri (4-4) at home and wait for their final test of the regular season against Tennessee (4-4) in a couple of weeks. And as mentioned, we'll get that first Playoff ranking this week so we'll really see what the true pecking order is and what each team needs to do to be one of those 4 teams. And while I wait, I get Game 6 (and hopefully final game) of the World Series also on Tuesday. So let's Go Braves! That is all.
