I feel rather bad waiting a few days after the man passed away but the great Sidney Lumet is gone from us and we will not see another film from him. This is truly a shame.
Let me give you a list of some of his best works:
– 12 Angry Men
- The Fugitive Kind
– Long Day’s Journey Into Night
– The Pawnbroker
– Fail-Safe
– Serpico
– Murder on the Orient Express
– Dog Day Afternoon
– Network
– Equus
– The Wiz
– Deathtrap
– The Verdict
– Garbo Talks
– The Morning After
– Running on Empty
– Q & A
– Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead
I don't know about you, but this list presents a damn fine example of cinema of the late 20th century (and some time after.) He may not have been the flashiest of directors, but you always felt like you'd get a "good film" from him. The list above pretty much proves that. Each film seemed to have a heart that does not exist today (though see his last film...please!) Hollywood may be bankrupt now, but it was not always that way. Please watch one of the above films if you have not seen it before. It can only do the industry good. Rest in peace to a GREAT director. That is all.
