I would be remiss if I did not offer up some congrats to both Frank Thomas and Craig Biggio. Thomas hit his 500th home run yesterday and Biggio reached 3,000 hits. In yesteryear, both accomplishments would make these men locks for the Hall of Fame. Not so much today. 3,000 is still a magical number, however, and I think Biggio is a lock (and a well deserved lock, at that.) Thomas will have the tougher time. But I certainly hope that voters will recall what a power Frank Thomas was in his first decade in the bigs. His nickname is "The Big Hurt" for a reason. He's always been one of my favorites. And I can only hope that he keeps playing long enough to pad his stats such that his place in Cooperstown is secured. Shoot, if one looks at those numbers right now they still ain't bad - a lifetime .303 batting average, a .975 OPS for his career, with 2,321 hits, 1,617 runs batted in, and even 468 doubles. Not bad at all. Congratulations to both men and I certainly look forward to the day I see them both join the august group we call Hall of Famers. That is all.
