Tony is angry, it seems - and it shows. The title of the episode suggests Tony is chasing something. The thematic elements from the episode suggest gambling debts, but I think it is much more. There is the theory that Tony must "decompensate" brought up by Melfi to her own psychiatrist. Perhaps what Tony is chasing is every last thing he can find so that does not happen. Even Melfi seems irritated by Tony's attitude vis-a-vis therapy. He wants to "enjoy the gift" and recall that "he's up...way up." But is he?
There was a lot going on in this past episode, but underneath it all is this one specific issue - can Tony face up to who he is and where he is going? Right now, it seems the answer is no. When was the last time you saw Tony so vicious towards Hesh? When is it that Tony decides to verbally abuse Carmela and blame her for the missing money from the birdfeeder? When have we ever seen Tony this cruel and focused on being such towards his friends and associates? Things are coming to a head in Tony's life and this episode seemed to be the culmination of these actions. We have five left. Hopefully, we'll be able to see how Tony addresses these issues with Melfi...or burns out like a dying star. That is all.
