Well that was no good. I mean, yes I did predict the Best Pitcure in a year that no one could really predict, but the rest of my picks were not so good. Had I not correctly picked three of the four in the crapshoot, I would have missed over half of the catagories. As it is, this is the worst year for quite some time - 13/24. Damn! But at least Marty finally has his Oscar. I was very happy about that. Too bad for O'Toole. Eight times and still no win. Tragedy.
The show it self was very long, but not as bad as I think some people might be saying. I personally enjoyed Ellen quite a lot. She did not try and stand out too much, nor did she try and do any edgy material. She played it safe and kept things moving along. If there was something that did not work it was those dancers. For a show pressed to get in at under four hours, did we need that? And once more I have to question all these bloody film montages. We have time for those but we don't have enough time for winners to properly thank those that matter?
The other tidbits I recall from the night - early on, of course, noting that Jack had no hair. What was with that? And Al Gore proved that he has a sense of humor (he could loan some to Sean Penn, methinks) and that was a nice gag he did with Leo about an announcement that got cut off. But what exactly does "environmentally safe show" mean? That they drove hybrid cars there? Or was there something more to that? You got me.
Arkin winning was fine (even though he beat Eddie) but reading a prepared speech is just awful. And does anyone really know what Ennio Morricone said? I know Clint translated, but still. And here was a strange sound I heard last night - "Academy Award winning screenwriter, Ben Affleck." I mean, I remember he and Damon won, but those words just sound funny together like that. And Gwyneth Paltrow look beautiful...that hair and her dress...I was spellbound watching her cross the stage and present. Just wow! Other than that, I don't have too many other recollections. I am glad I did not put any money down because I would have lost big time. Still, I did pick 6 out of the big 8. I'll just have to do better next year. I'll add the ones I got right and the ones I missed in the picks post below when I get a chance (and when I don't mind being reminded how wrong I was.) That is all.
Awwwww.....leave Ben alone. "Good Will Hunting" was damn good writing. I think it is pretty sucky that you live walking distance from me and don't ever want to go see anything at the Plaza. Consider that an invitation, Hurd.
