I'm terribly late posting my final top 25 ranking from this previous college football season. No excuse other than laziness, frankly. It was a good bowl season and I cannot say I enjoyed the national championship game. But I did enjoy seeing an SEC team win the whole thing, even if it was Florida. I especially enjoyed the Georgia win over VA Tech, and though I did not see it when it played (I have since seen most of the highlights) I understand the Boise State/Oklahoma match to be one of the best in recent years. All told, a well rounded finish for an interesting year in college football. So let's look at how I ranked them:
- Florida (13-1)
- Boise State (13-0)
- Ohio State (12-1)
- Wisconsin (12-1)
- Louisville (12-1)
- USC (11-2)
- LSU (11-2)
- Auburn (11-2)
- Michigan (11-2)
- West Virginia (11-2)
- Rutgers (11-2)
- BYU (11-2)
- Oklahoma (11-3)
- Wake Forest (11-3)
- Notre Dame (10-3)
- Texas (10-3)
- California (10-3)
- Arkansas (10-4)
- TCU (11-2)
- Oregon State (10-4)
- Boston College (10-3)
- Virginia Tech (10-3)
- Hawaii (11-3)
- Georgia (9-4)
- Penn State (9-4)
And there you have it. I came very, very close to ranking Boise State at the top but decided that Florida's demolition job on Ohio State deserved that place. But Boise State deserves quite a bit of recognition for getting through the entire slate of games unscathed. And Wisconsin really has been overlooked this whole year, especially after their victory over Arkansas. A solid top five. And I am pleased with the rest of the ranking except for the final five spots. It wasn't easy to choose which teams get there but this is how it shook out in my mind. I am sure Vols fans are not happy, but so be it. They were beat by Penn State who sneaks back into the rankings with their 20-10 win.
I am looking forward to next season even if Florida scares the hell out of me. But with the hiring of Nick Saban at Alabama, the SEC looks stacked. Though it makes the hunt for a national title harder, I would prefer to beat good talent than simply roll to a championship. Look to Ohio State for the effects of that. The SEC is simply the hardest conference to get through what with recruiting talent, ability of the coaches and just damn fine football all around. Getting out of there with only one loss is something special and you can look to the Florida win for proof of that. I expect it to be just as hard if not moreso next year. But first...baseball. Ahhh...I love that sound. Until next year, this is the last poll. I hope you enjoyed my meager writing and rankings. Thanks for reading. That is all.
