Well USC certainly screwed the pooch, didn't they? Good for UCLA. I had my Bruins cap on last night in celebration and I imagine my sister (who went to UCLA) tied one on quite well. But now the question becomes who goes to the big game to face Ohio State? It seems no one is real excited by any of the potential match-ups. I say nuts. There are three teams that have a legitimate argument to play there and I can get behind each of them. Let's look at my top 25 first and then look at the possible outcome of the bowl selection.
- Ohio State (12-0)
- Florida (12-1)
- Michigan (11-1)
- Boise State (12-0)
- Wisconsin (11-1)
- Notre Dame (10-2)
- Louisville (11-1)
- LSU (10-2)
- Oklahoma (11-2)
- Wake Forest (11-2)
- USC (10-2)
- Auburn (10-2)
- Virginia Tech (10-2)
- West Virginia (10-2)
- Arkansas (10-3)
- Rutgers (10-2)
- BYU (10-2)
- Texas (9-3)
- Tennessee (9-3)
- California (9-3)
- TCU (10-2)
- Texas A&M (9-3)
- Georgia Tech (9-4)
- Oregon State (9-4)
- Georgia (8-4)
I hated dropping Nebraska out of the top 25, but I felt Oregon State deserved to jump in after beating a good Hawaii team early this morning. And Georgia Tech should consider itself lucky they are still in there. I would have dropped them below Georgia (since the Dawgs beat them) but playing for the ACC championship couts for something even if they lost.
As for the big game, I will say my personal preference would be to see Boise State have a shot at Ohio State. There are two undefeated teams in the country and if we claim to want the definitive national champion, shouldn't we reward a team (regardless of schedule) that goes undefeated to play for it all? But we all know that won't happen. So it comes down to Florida and Michigan and even though Michigan is a very good team, the fact is Ohio State already beat them once this year. No one wants a rematch so it seems natural for Florida to step into the picture. But the polls will need to shake out that way. If Michigan ends up going, I think we can all say that the BCS is a joke (which we kind of know anyway.) At least we can thank USC for that, right? Stay tuned tonight to find out. And though I hate to say this (it really makes my skin crawl) - Go Gators! That is all.
