I've been blogging lightly recently because a. it's been a slow few weeks for news (anything new that is) and 2. because it's difficult to come up with something interesting or new to say on any news item every single day. With that said, I thought maybe I'd do a Larry King-like post that includes some stray thoughts that have been running around in my head lately.
So George O'Leary might work again. Easy Rider will be happy. Perhaps he can stick to football this time, rather than trying to impress with more stories of his years as a WWI flying ace and his trusty Sopwith Camel.
And Dan Reeves is no more - coach of the Falcons that is. Good riddance on the one hand, too bad on the other. He has done some good for our beleaguered football team, but lately, he cannot seem to tie his shoes correctly, much less handle a talent like Mike Vick.
More BCS whining...what is with these people? I've discussed my thoughts on this before, but I find it insane that folks cannot get passed their old perceptions of college football - once the BCS came into effect, the old polls mean much less now. Just because a team is number one in the AP, does not make it the best team in the land. The BCS is there to help determine that. It seems the only time anyone really wants to pretend it means anything is when their check comes with the BCS logo on it.
The hot-stove league is as cold as ice right now. And the fact the Greg Maddux is no longer a Brave weighs heavily on me. He is my favorite pitcher of this generation and I cannot believe that he will not be wearing a Braves uniform when he wins his 300th game. It's just wrong. Instead, we go out and pick up some leftover from Mile High named John Thomson...again, I say - who? 2004 is gonna be a terrible year for the Braves, and perhaps that is best for all involved.
I understand 60 Minutes finally got on the "let's Bash Abercrombie and Fitch" bandwagon the other night. Now, I'm no prude, but I have marveled at how their "advertising" has gone relatively unchallenged by more parents - until now that is. The weird thing is, 60 Minutes was more concerned that there were not enough naked black and Asian bodies rather than too many naked white bodies. Strange world. Look, the occasional Playboy on the coffee table isn't going to kill little Johnny. In fact, it may help teach little Johnny about some of the things he needs to know about, especially if in conjunction with what little Johnny's daddy has to say about it, but the soft-core porn peddled by this clothing store goes way beyond that. It's lovely photography and would be right at home in a magazine that portrayed itself as catering to an adult crowd, but they do not and therefore, I am not entirely sad that they have decided to discontinue the catalogue. And it was done correctly - not by decree from some government agency but by steadfast action of concerned citizens that forced the company to make a private decision. This is how our system works best.
Reagan on the dime...don't like it. Nancy Reagan doesn't like it. Why are we trying to do it? I think he was a great President, but there is no reason to take FDR off and replace him with Ronny. No reason to even make two different sets of dimes - just leave it be. Time will allow for plenty of tributes to this man. Let's not over do it.
Japan is sending 600 troops to Iraq. That's a start. Still, the Chinese apparently feel a little uncomfortable with a Japan possibly ready to re-militarize. Good.
Gore's endorsement of Dean - incredibly tasteless in regard to Lieberman. I mean, here's a man who changed his whole agenda just to be your vice presidential candidate and you don't even have the common courtesy to ring him up to tell him rather than making him learn the news from...well, the news? No class.
And finally, I'd like to pay tribute to John Lennon. His death occurred 23 years ago as of this past Monday. Though I was too young to know him while he was alive, he has always been someone that I revered. It's funny, I don't particularly agree with him on certain political issues anymore, but he remains the most self actualized person I have ever heard about. John Lennon marched to his own drum his whole life and never let anyone change that. It's that individuality that I applaud and wish to live up to such a standard. I miss him, as I'm sure many others do. He was a great man.
I guess that's all for this post. Can't think of any other topics to touch on. Might add to it if I think of any others. Anyway, forgive my slow posting lately. Some weeks are better than others. That is all.
