Well, let's start with the good. The Cubs win and have a chance to return to the World Series for the first time since 1945 with one more win. And they didn't just win last night, they won huge. Beckett won't be easy today, but they have three games to get that one win setting up my World Series.
Which gets me to the Evil. Damn the Yankees, damn 'em all to hell. First, let me say - Don Zimmer had it coming. You don't go after Pedro Martinez if you don't want to get bitch-slapped. I was frankly surprised that Big Mouth McCarver wasn't more in support of Pedro instead of all that "that is horrible...just disgusting." He was only the personal catcher for both Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton - two guys I bet Don Zimmer didn't go after when he was a hunger pup. Look - a pitcher has the right to pitch on the inside part of the plate - if you hang out there, you're gonna get popped sooner or later. Clemens pitches that way, as he should. I don't see 'ol Don getting all that upset at Roger. I thought Pedro handled it well - he didn't hit him, he just shoved him away. It's not Pedro's fault that Don Zimmer is 175 years old.
As for the rest of the game, it was a close one. Sox just didn't get it done. And they didn't get it done in one of Pedro's starts. That doesn't bode well for the rest of the series. Today, the Yankees send out the wannabe Babe (in both spirit and girth), David Wells. To counter, the Red Sox sacrifice the oddest pitcher in baseball. I have no idea how John Burkett gets batters out. He looks like he's throwing the ball at maybe 40 mph - maybe. Yet he keeps pitching and somehow keeps getting batters out. Let's hope he does the same today. Sox have a job to do - destroy the evil empire. That is all.
