For Arabs, by Arabs, eh? I can't say I disagree with the idea presented here, but I think it's a bit of wishful thinking. Any transition within the Arab world must come from within, so this idea surely has merit, but I just don't see many Arab leaders allowing such reform because it would mean giving up some power too. Karatnycky hits the nail on the head regarding the current focus of the U.N., but if these folks didn't care enough prior to the war, a lack of regard that predates this report for many years, I don't see why they would give a damn now. The whole goal of France, the U.N., Arab leaders and frankly many of our own leaders at home is to see the reconstruction fail on some level because the idea that Bush was right or that the current administration is successful cannot be, in their minds. It's a simple power struggle that Bush cannot be allowed to win. Altruism simply does not enter into the equation and that's a shame. That is all.
